Why I Pole Dance

Why do I Pole Dance?

This question has come up a lot during the last 8 years that I have been pole dancing and even more so in the last 18 months since I made pole dancing my full-time job. It’s also a question that is usually closely followed by the statement “oh I’ve heard that’s good for fitness”.

It’s a hard question to answer because it’s not as straight forward as having just one reason why and why I love it.

Why do I Pole Dance?

I pole dance because I love to dance. Plain and simple. I have danced pretty much my whole life and this is just another form of dancing that I love. It’s about movement and music and allowing myself to focus on nothing but myself and my body for an hour. There is something incredibly therapeutic for me about dancing. I don’t know exactly what it is but when I am dancing I am at my happiest.

I found pole dancing at a time in my life when I was looking for something new and exciting and challenging. Don’t ask me why I chose pole dancing; I am actually scared of heights and being upside down! Truth be told when I came to my first class I knew very little about pole dancing. I had heard bits and pieces about how it was meant to be ah-mazing for fitness and I am always willing to try anything, and from my first class I was hooked. It was everything about it: the pumping cardio warm up, the crazy music, the infectious enthusiasm of the instructor, the energy from everyone in the room, the challenge of spinning around that brass pole, the cheekiness of the dance moves. Everything.

This is why I pole dance.

Why do I Pole Dance?

I pole dance because I love that it has allowed me to challenge myself in ways I never thought I would.

I am generally a fairly nervous person when it comes to trying new things. As a general rule I don’t ever like putting myself in situations where I feel uncomfortable or where I feel like I don’t have control (I mean does anyone??).

Call me a perfectionist or call me a control freak but it’s true. And yet with pole dancing I find that I am forever challenging my sense of self and putting myself in situations that I don’t feel comfortable. Be it learning new tricks (anyone who has ever been in class with me as a student knows I am a total sook and prefer tricks where I am upright and my feet are close to the ground) or learning new floor work that puts me in weird and wonderful positions.

But then there is that moment, where everything clicks into place. Where the trick finally works or I am finally strong enough to do it. And this amazing sense of achievement comes over me and I feel like I could conquer the world.

This is why I pole dance.

Why do I Pole dance?

I pole dance because it has been the single greatest thing I have ever done for my fitness.

I am stronger then I have ever been. I am leaner than I have ever been.

Pole dancing gives you tangible markers for your fitness that you might not necessarily appreciate if you were say going to the gym. When you go to the gym the most obvious marker for an increase in your fitness or strength is that you lift more or that you can run on the treadmill for longer. But it’s the just more of the same movement or action. I’m still just lifting weights or running on the spot….

But with pole dancing your markers for an increase in fitness or strength is that you can finally dance a whole routine through without feeling like you are going to go into cardiac arrest or you can do a trick that eight weeks ago you couldn’t do.

This is why I pole dance.

Why do I Pole Dance?

I pole dance because it has allowed me to meet an amazing community of people who I would have never otherwise have had a chance to meet.

I have met some of the most incredible and inspiring people since I began pole dancing. They are people who can bring my spirits up when I am down, people who provide me with a different perspective to life, people who have taught me about broader social issues, people who have introduced me to new music and experiences, people who love reality tv and bad 90s music as much as I do.

This is why I pole dance.

Why do I Pole Dance?

I pole dance because it has allowed me to find a level of sensuality and sexuality that I didn’t even know was there.

It has allowed me to be sensual in a way that I don’t feel like I need to apologise for. I am more confident in who I am and way more confident about owning it. It gives me the freedom to express who I am and how I am feeling.

This is why I pole dance.

Why do I Pole Dance?

I pole dance because I want to. And because it is god damn fun. And it fills my heart with joy and I love all the things it has brought into my life.

This is why I pole dance.
