Why I Pole Dance

By Sarah Schrader
Co-owner of Pole Princess Hawthorn and MtWaverley

Why do I Pole Dance?

This question has come up a lot during the last 8 years that I have been pole dancing and even more so in the last 18 months since I made pole dancing my full-time job. It’s also a question that is usually closely followed by the statement “oh I’ve heard that’s good for fitness”.

It’s a hard question to answer because it’s not as straight forward as having just one reason why and why I love it.

Guess what, you actually can

by Jen Zimmermann
“I can’t do this!” Sounds familiar? From my experience, it is the most commonly used sentence in any class I’ve ever taught or even attended myself. When I walk around in my classes and ask students to show me a particular move, this is how they will pre-empt their demo. Other popular variations include: “it looks ugly on me”, “I’m not good/strong/flexible enough for that” or my personal favourite “yeah nah”. Funnily enough though, it is usually followed by the person doing the exact thing they just said they can’t do. Guess what, you actually can.
Believe me, I get it! It is daunting when you try a new trick for the first time, regardless of whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned pole dancer (let’s be honest, haven’t we all face-planted before? Yes, yes we have). There’s nothing wrong with a healthy amount of respect and caution towards a new move – but what’s with all the negative self-talk?

Talking yourself down has sadly become very common for women in all areas of life, including work, personal relationships, body image and fitness. If you were keeping count, you’d probably be surprised how often you say something bad about yourself without even realising it.

Not a big deal? Well yes, it kinda is: as many recent studies have proven, negative self-talk reinforces bad feelings you might have about yourself, and might end up seriously damaging your self-confidence. If you keep telling yourself that you’re not good at something, you are making it a lot harder for yourself to get better at it. Instead, use positive mantras and thoughts to trick your mind into believing in yourself, even if you’re not quite there yet, and you might be surprised at the difference it can make. Think of it as a simple placebo effect.
What does this have to do with pole? Often the barriers we come up against in our practice are in our head. We don’t trust ourselves enough, or our inner critic is keeping us from unleashing our full potential. Most of the things you think you can’t do are actually achievable and if you look back at your pole journey, I bet there’s at least one trick you thought you’d never get, that you are mastering now.

Don’t get me wrong here, of course there will always be tricks you actually can’t do at first (like, for real) – but you can try, and if you set your mind to it, you will get most of them eventually. Some might not work for your body (especially once you get to the higher levels), and you know what, that is okay! You don’t have to be able to do every single crazy trick out there. There will always be variations that suit you better and play to your strengths.

Don’t make the mistake of comparing yourself to your fellow polers either. You are you and you are amazing so work with what you’ve got. Everybody is gifted in different ways; you might be strong through your upper body or super flexi, have super tight leg grips or beautifully pointed toes – find what comes naturally to you and use it to your advantage.

While we always recommend that you work on the things you can’t yet do as well, you can definitely build your repertoire around tricks that work for you. So what if the girl next to you climbs up all the way to the roof the very first time she tries or ‘accidentally’ whips out a handspring (cow!) – she might not be able to move to music as gracefully as you can.

Keep that in mind for your next class and be proud of what your body can do – if you think about the things we put it through, it really is quite remarkable. Still not convinced? Here’s Ryan Gosling telling you – who are we to doubt him?

Top 5 Reasons to Pole Dance

When talking about fitness and the health benefits of different forms of workouts, you can’t look last pole dancing. Pole dancing has quickly become a very popular form of exercise and even a competitive event. Not only is it a great way to embrace your inner sexiness, but it also has numerous health benefits that shouldn’t be overlooked. We could talk about the benefits for days but instead, we’ve picked our top 5 reasons to pole dance for you guys so you can high-five yourselves for the awesome things you’re doing for your body right now!

1. BURN CALORIES LIKE THEY’RE YOU’RE WORTHLESS X-BOYFRIEND!

Harsh but true! Most people in the modern world could stand to lose about 10 kilos of fat, so any form of exercise is welcome. However, pole dancing taxes the muscles in the entire body and you are always moving – making it a great isometric and cardiovascular exercise wrapped into one. Way back in 2008 we ran a weight loss challenge to prove pole dancing is a genuine way to lose weight. The experiment was so successful it was featured on A Current Affair! Finalists of the challenge were told to do 3 pole dancing classes per week and change nothing else about their life. They all lost a minimum of 5 kilos in 8-weeks and the winner lost a whopping 12 kilos! Interested? We’re launching a new challenge soon only for people that are curious but at this stage have not yet tried pole dancing. Register here if you want to know more.

2. BUILDS CONFIDENCE HIGHER THAN YONCE’S!

Once you get the basics down and strengthen your muscles a bit, you will quickly begin to develop some serious skills and a body that makes heads turn. Being confident isn’t just about your state of mind – you will actually start to walk tall and improve your posture. Your skills on the pole will translate into real life and you will be able to move with the nimbleness and graciousness of a cat.

3. MOTIVATION ON FLEEK!

If a workout feels like a chore and you don’t really see any serious progress or you don’t actually pick up any skills that are applicable in real life, then you will quickly lose motivation. Pole dancing develops a strong body, builds stamina and makes you feel sexy. As your skills improve you will be motivated to work harder. Working out with a group of like-minded women also keeps you motivated as you start to build friendships with people that will cheer you on even through your nemesis pole tricks!

4. STAY FIT ON THE INSIDE!

Joint pain is a serious and persistent issue for many people and women in particular have a higher risk of developing osteoporosis later in life. Developing strong bones and connective tissue, along with increasing joint mobility, helps significantly decrease the risk of osteoporosis in women. Since you are not putting huge stress on your joints, as you would if you were running or skipping rope, pole dancing is a very safe form of exercise. Due to the fact that you are constantly strengthening the muscles in your hands by gripping the pole, common repetitive strain injuries like carpal tunnel syndrome can also be avoided.

5. SNOW WHITE AIN’T GOT NOTHIN’ ON YOUR SLEEPING SKILLS!

Resting is just as important for a healthy body as working out and eating the right food. Unfortunately not many people get enough sleep and most of the time it’s because they just can’t go to sleep. Regular workouts that tax the body, combined with the stretching you do as part of your pole dancing training, will ensure that you get a good night’s sleep every time you hit the hay.

The benefits of pole dancing aren’t limited to developing a strong body. It can help you improve your mental and emotional health, prevent injuries and increase mobility, as well as give your social and love life a boost by making you more confident and agile. If you haven’t taken the leap yet, you should definitely give it a try.

We’re looking for 8 women located anywhere in Melbourne to take our next fitness challenge. If you:
• Are curious about pole dancing but are too scared to try – you must never have done a class yet
• Are too scared to wear shorts & that’s what stops you (don’t worry, in this challenge you don’t have to wear them)
• Think you’re not strong enough to even attempt pole dancing

Then we want you! You will need to be able to commit to an 8-week schedule and agree to use using your journey for marketing purposes. If you’re ready to step outside of your comfort zone, here’s the link to register for more information.

The Perfect Class Mix

By Anastacia Snelleksz
Founder of Pole Princess
You may have had a squizz at our timetable and wondered what all of our classes really mean. You probably took the easy route and started with a Level One Pole Course and slowly worked your way up – that’s what everyone else does so I reckon that’s what you do, right?

Wrong!

We say this all the time but pole dancing is like going to the gym. When you first take out a gym membership you will tell yourself you’re going to go at least 4 times a week, right? Or maybe every day if you’re super keen beans… And for the first few weeks at least you will stick to that goal. Before you know it, you’re able to run faster, walk further, lift heavier, whatever it may be. We all know this feeling. Continue reading The Perfect Class Mix

Pole Dancing Muscles

Pole dancing isn’t the taboo activity it used to be. The strength-training nature of it has gained attention among physical fitness experts. Some people even have poles installed in their home. Pole dancing works most of your body’s muscles while burning calories and building coordination. Talk to your doctor before beginning a pole dancing routine.

Abdominals

Any moves that require balance challenge your core muscles, making pole dancing ideal in this regard. Many of the exercises involve being upside down, which also works your abdominal muscles. Pole dancing moves also provide resistance to your stomach area, enhancing the benefits. Most choices are beneficial for your core, but spinners, chairs, floaters, inverts and ab pullups are good options. Continue reading Pole Dancing Muscles
